How to Fill a Fountain Pen: Every Method Explained

There is a moment, right before you fill a fountain pen, that feels almost ceremonial. The ink bottle sits open on the desk. The pen is in your hand, uncapped, nib pointed down. You're about to do something that writers have done for over a century and a half — transfer a tiny reservoir of colour from a bottle into a tube, so that it can flow, at your command, onto a page.

It sounds simple. And in practice, most of the time, it is. But here's what surprises almost everyone who goes deeper into this hobby: there is no single way to fill a fountain pen. There are eight — possibly more, depending on how you count. Each one is a different philosophy — a different answer to the question of how ink should move from bottle to nib. Some are elegant. Some are ingenious. And one of them, invented by Japanese pen makers in the late 1920s, has been almost entirely forgotten by the modern fountain pen world.

This guide covers all of them. Whether you've just picked up your first pen or you've been collecting for years and want to understand the mechanisms behind your favourites — this is the one place you'll find every method explained clearly, honestly, and with genuine enthusiasm for what makes each one special.

Let's fill some pens.

Before You Fill: What Every Method Has in Common

Before we get into the mechanics of each filling system, it helps to understand what they all share. Every method is doing the same fundamental thing: creating a reservoir of ink inside the pen, from which capillary action — the same physics that makes water climb a paper towel — pulls ink down through the feed and onto the nib tip. The feed, that ribbed plastic or ebonite piece sitting beneath the nib, is the real workhorse here. It controls flow, prevents flooding, and keeps the ink moving at exactly the right pace.

Two rules apply regardless of which method you use. First, always clean your pen before switching inks — residue from the previous fill can contaminate your new colour or, worse, cause a chemical reaction if the inks are incompatible. Second, as Vintage Pens' comprehensive filling guide wisely notes, never force a stiff filling mechanism. If something feels stuck, the answer is patient cleaning, not force. A snapped piston rod or cracked barrel is a far worse problem than a slightly dry pen.

With that said — let's begin.

Method 1: The Cartridge

What it is

The cartridge is the gateway drug of fountain pen filling. It's a small, sealed plastic tube of ink that snaps or pushes directly into the pen's section — no bottles, no mess, no ritual. You pull out the old one, push in the new one, and you're writing within minutes. For anyone brand new to fountain pens, this is where almost every journey starts, and there's absolutely no shame in that.

How to fill

Unscrew the barrel from the section. Remove the spent cartridge — it may have a drop or two left in it, so point it away from anything you care about. Take a new cartridge and push it firmly into the back of the section until you feel (and sometimes hear) a small click or pop as the seal breaks. Reassemble the pen, hold it nib-down for a minute to let gravity begin pulling ink toward the feed, and you're ready. If ink doesn't flow immediately, gently squeeze the cartridge once while the nib is on paper.

The honest truth about cartridges

The cartridge's greatest strength is also its limitation: it locks you into the manufacturer's ink range, or a small selection of compatible third-party cartridges. You won't get to explore the extraordinary world of bottled inks — the sheening burgundies, the shading teals, the gold-flecked limited editions — until you move on. Use cartridges to learn the pen. Then graduate.

Method 2: The Converter

What it is

The converter is the cartridge's more sophisticated sibling. It's a refillable reservoir — the same shape and size as a cartridge, so it fits any cartridge-compatible pen — with an internal piston or squeeze mechanism that lets you draw ink directly from a bottle. This is the method that opens up the full, intoxicating world of bottled fountain pen ink, and it's where most everyday enthusiasts land and stay comfortably for years.

Twist vs squeeze

Most converters use a twist mechanism: a small knob at one end turns a piston that compresses or expands the ink chamber. Squeeze converters — less common — have a flexible plastic body you compress with your fingers before submerging the nib, then release to draw ink in. Both work well. Twist converters are generally more reliable over time.

How to fill

Attach the converter to the section if it isn't already. Submerge the nib fully into your ink bottle — not just the tip, but the entire nib and the bottom of the feed. This is important: a partial submersion draws air as well as ink. Twist the converter knob to draw ink in slowly. Once full, twist slightly in reverse to push out any air bubbles lurking near the tip, then draw ink again to top up. Withdraw the pen, wipe the nib clean with a lint-free cloth, and cap it. As Fountain Pen Revolution's filling guide recommends, repeating the fill cycle two to three times helps maximise capacity and purge any remaining air pockets.

One note for those using Japanese pens: Pilot, Platinum, and Sailor all use proprietary converter designs. Their converters won't fit other brands, and other brands' converters won't fit them. Always buy the converter made for your specific pen.

Method 3: The Eyedropper

What it is

The eyedropper method is the oldest trick in the book — literally. Before pens had built-in filling systems, this was the only way. You unscrew the section from the barrel, fill the barrel itself with ink using a dropper or syringe, reassemble, and write. No mechanism at all. Just ink, directly in the tube. The result is the largest ink capacity of any method, because you're using the entire barrel as your reservoir rather than a small insert inside it.

How to fill

Unscrew the section from the barrel completely. Using an eyedropper or blunt-tip syringe, fill the barrel with ink — but leave a small air gap at the top, roughly the last five to eight millimetres. This air pocket acts as a buffer against pressure changes that could push ink unexpectedly through the nib. Before reassembling, apply a thin coat of silicone grease to the barrel's threads. This is the step most people skip and then regret: without it, ink will slowly seep through the joint and find its way onto your fingers, your paper, and eventually your shirt.

Not every pen can be converted to an eyedropper. The barrel must be airtight — no internal holes, no pressure valves. Cheaper transparent acrylic pens are often ideal candidates, and they have the added pleasure of letting you watch your ink level through the barrel walls. Eyedropper conversion is not recommended for travel, as temperature and pressure changes can cause unpredictable ink flow — the phenomenon enthusiasts call "burping."

Method 4: The Piston Filler

What it is

If the converter is a detachable piston, the piston filler is one built directly into the pen itself. A knob at the end of the barrel turns a threaded piston that runs the length of the body, compressing and expanding to draw ink in. It's a more elegant, more integrated solution — and because it uses the full barrel as a reservoir without any inserted cartridge or converter taking up space, it typically holds more ink than a converter-based pen of the same size.

As The Gentleman Stationer notes in his filling systems comparison, piston fillers tend to attract collectors for a reason: there's something deeply satisfying about a mechanism that's part of the pen itself, not something plugged in from outside. Many of the most beautiful and historically significant pens in the world — Pelikan's M800, Montblanc's 149, vintage Pilot Customs — use this system.

How to fill

Twist the knob at the end of the barrel clockwise until the piston compresses fully toward the nib end. Submerge the nib entirely in ink. Slowly twist the knob counterclockwise to draw ink into the barrel — you'll see it rising through the section if your pen is transparent, or feel the resistance building if it's not. Once the barrel is full, twist slightly clockwise to push the piston down a fraction, expelling any air bubble at the top, then draw back up again to top off. Wipe, cap, and you're done.

Method 5: The Vacuum Filler

What it is

The vacuum filler might be the most dramatic of all the modern filling systems, and it rewards the two seconds of drama it delivers with one of the largest ink capacities available in a non-eyedropper pen. Instead of a threaded piston that draws ink gradually, it uses a plunger that you pull fully out, submerge in ink, and then push rapidly all the way down — creating a burst of negative pressure that pulls a large slug of ink into the barrel in a single satisfying rush.

Famous vacuum filler pens include the TWSBI Vac700R and the Pilot Custom 823. Both are beloved for this exact reason: the fill is fast, efficient, and genuinely fun to perform.

How to fill

Unscrew the filler knob at the back of the pen to unlock the plunger. Pull the plunger rod all the way out to its full extension. Submerge the nib fully in ink. Now push the rod firmly all the way down in one smooth motion — this expels all the air from the barrel and creates a vacuum, which the ink rushes in to fill as the plunger reaches its lowest point. Withdraw the pen and wipe the nib clean.

One critical note that catches almost every new vacuum filler owner: as Goulet Pens explains in their excellent guide, you must unscrew the back knob slightly while writing to allow ink to flow from the barrel to the nib. The sealed mechanism that makes these pens travel-safe also cuts off ink supply when fully closed. Forget this step and your pen will write beautifully for a page or two, then run dry — with a full barrel of ink sitting just behind the seal.

Method 6: The Sac Fillers — A Family of Mechanisms

Before the piston filler became the enthusiast's standard, a different philosophy dominated fountain pen design for over four decades: the rubber ink sac. A flexible latex or rubber tube sits inside the barrel, connected to the feed. Compress it, and air escapes through the nib. Release it, and the sac springs back open, drawing ink in. Simple, reliable, and remarkably long-lived — sac pens made between the 1910s and 1960s still write beautifully today once their sacs are replaced.

The mechanism for compressing the sac evolved through several generations, each solving the problem a slightly different way.

The Lever Filler

The original and most widespread sac mechanism, patented by Sheaffer in 1907 and quickly adopted by almost every major manufacturer. A hinged lever sits flush against the side of the barrel. Lifting it causes the far end to pivot inward, pushing on a metal pressure bar that runs the length of the sac. The sac collapses, air escapes, and when you release the lever the sac snaps back and draws ink in. As Vintage Pens' filling guide cautions, never force a lever against an old hardened sac — it's one of the easiest ways to crack a barrel or snap the lever box.

To fill: submerge the nib fully, lift the lever completely, release, and hold the nib in ink for a full ten seconds. Patience here is the difference between a half-full and a properly full pen.

The Button Filler and Aerometric (Squeeze Bar)

Parker's answer to the lever was the button filler, introduced with the Duofold around 1921. A button hidden beneath a removable blind cap at the end of the barrel pushes down on the same pressure bar concept — same sac, same physics, just a more concealed mechanism. The aerometric filler, best known from the Parker 51, went further still: the entire barrel is removed for filling, exposing a metal sac guard with a spring-steel squeeze bar affixed to its side. Press the bar, release, and the self-contained unit draws ink in. The Parker 51's aerometric filler is considered one of the most reliable sac mechanisms ever made.

A Note on Sac Replacement

All rubber sacs eventually harden, crack, and fail — usually after several decades. A sac pen that won't hold ink almost certainly needs a new sac rather than a new pen. Sac replacement is one of the most accessible vintage pen repairs, and a good pen restorer can have a lever filler back in service in under an hour. If you're buying vintage, factor this into your decision — but don't let it put you off. A restored sac pen is often a more satisfying writer than its modern equivalents.




Method 7: The Pilot Super 100 — Japan's Knob Filler

Between the lever-fill era and the modern aerometric and converter systems, Pilot produced a fascinating transitional mechanism on their Super series pens of the 1950s. Known as the knob filler or quarter-turn filler, it used a top-mounted knob — rather than a side lever — to activate an internal lever arm that compressed the ink sac. The result was cleaner in appearance than a lever pen, with no protrusion breaking the barrel's silhouette, and more tactile than a button filler.

As documented by Peyton Street Pens' vintage Pilot listings, these pens represent a bridge between Japan's lever-fill tradition and the aerometric era — a design decision that reflects Pilot's constant refinement of the writing instrument even in the mid-century period. Finding a working example today is a genuine treat.

To fill: submerge the nib, press the top knob firmly down to compress the sac, then release and hold in ink for ten seconds. One press is usually sufficient for a good fill.

Method 8: The Japanese Ink Stopper — A Method Almost Lost to Time

A method born from necessity

This is the one most modern fountain pen users have never heard of. And it deserves more attention than it gets.

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Japanese pen makers faced a problem that was uniquely their own. The kimono, still the everyday garment of much of Japanese society at the time, was extraordinarily vulnerable to ink stains. A leaking pen wasn't just an inconvenience — it could ruin a garment that represented significant value and cultural meaning. The eyedropper-fill pens of the era, while practical, were prone to exactly this kind of leakage when carried against the body or in a warm sleeve.

The Japanese solution was characteristically ingenious. As documented by Penfount's vintage filling systems archive, around this period Japanese manufacturers began adding a shutoff valve to their eyedropper-filled pens. These became known as Japanese eyedroppers — and the valve mechanism at their heart is what we're calling the ink stopper.

How it worked

The pen filled just like any other eyedropper: unscrew the section, introduce ink directly into the barrel with a dropper, reassemble. But inside the barrel ran a thin rod attached to the end knob of the pen. At the tip of this rod sat a rubber gasket — a stopper — that, when the knob was screwed down, made contact with the feed and physically sealed off the ink supply. No ink could reach the nib. No matter how warm the barrel became, no matter how the pen was jostled, nothing could leak out.

To write, the user unscrewed the knob slightly — just a partial turn — and the stopper retreated from the feed, reopening the ink channel. Pen Wing Stationery's vintage filling reference describes the elegance of this: "when the bottom is screwed on, the piston, which serves exclusively as a blocking valve, comes into contact with the nib group, blocking access of the ink to prevent any possible leakage." Finished writing? Screw the knob back down. The pen sealed itself completely, safe to carry next to silk without a second thought.

The pens that carried this system

This mechanism appeared across a range of Japanese-made eyedroppers from the 1930s onward — including mid-century Koshin pens, various Pilot predecessors, and numerous smaller regional makers whose names are now lost to time. A similar principle, independently developed, appeared in the British Onoto plunger-filler, though the Japanese implementation was specifically designed as a leakage prevention system rather than a filling mechanism in its own right.

The system largely disappeared as cartridge and converter technology made eyedropper filling obsolete for most users. But it hasn't vanished entirely. Modern pen makers like Opus 88, as reviewed by The Gentleman Stationer, have revived the Japanese eyedropper with its shutoff valve for a contemporary audience — combining enormous ink capacity with genuine leak protection. For collectors hunting vintage examples of the original mechanism, early Koshin and pre-war Japanese eyedroppers are the place to look.

It's a solution born from cultural context — from the specific demands of a society and a garment — and it worked beautifully. That's the kind of story that makes a pen more than just an object.




Which Method Is Right for You?

The honest answer is that the right method is the one that matches where you are in your fountain pen journey — and that it will probably change as you go further.

If you're brand new, start with a cartridge pen. Learn the pen itself before you learn the filling. Once you feel comfortable, move to a converter and a bottle of ink — that's when the hobby truly opens up. Explore inks freely. Once you find yourself buying pens partly for their mechanisms, a piston filler will give you the most satisfying daily experience. And when you want maximum capacity and don't mind a slightly more involved ritual, an eyedropper or vacuum filler earns its place on the desk.

The Japanese ink stopper? That one is for the collectors, the historians, and the people who read a paragraph about a 1930s solution to kimono staining and immediately wanted to find one. You know who you are.




The Ritual of Filling

There's a reason fountain pen enthusiasts talk about filling their pens the way some people talk about making coffee or sharpening a knife. It's a small act with a disproportionate amount of pleasure in it. The weight of the pen. The colour of the ink moving through glass. The click of a cartridge or the smooth compression of a piston. These things don't need to take more than thirty seconds, and yet they set the tone for everything that follows on the page.

Every method in this guide has been someone's favourite. Every one of them has a community of devoted users who will tell you, with genuine passion, why theirs is the best. The truth is that they're all good, and they're all worth trying. That's the kind of hobby this is.
